I wish…

I could begin to tell you…

…what type of ruckus I am about to get into.

Brief to the Gov.

Dear Ms. Marquez and Governor Martinez:

New Mexico GetEqual (NMGE) is an advocacy group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, intersex, and pansexual (LGBTQIP) people in the state of New Mexico. As organizers of peaceful, non-violent direct action, our mission is to empower the LGBTQIP community and allies to demand full legal and social equality. We would like to meet with Governor Susana Martinez to discuss marriage equality, Safe School measures that foster safety for and protection of students and teachers in academic settings, and enforcing and educating people on the existing employment non-discrimination laws in this beautiful state.

New Mexico does not currently issue same-sex marriage licenses. There is no legislation in New Mexico that contains any public policy explicitly banning same-sex marriage or defines marriage as only between a man and a woman. We would like Governor Martinez to follow in the bold footsteps of many Republican lawmakers in New York who voted to legalize same sex marriage.

New Mexico state legislature passed SB78, legislation that would create bullying prevention policies and implement anti-bullying programs in New Mexico public schools by the start of the 2012 school year. The bill now heads to Governor Martinez’s desk, we would like to discuss and encourage her to sign the bill. The legislation, passed in both chambers, includes language that addresses bullying in regards to real or perceived sexual orientation. In the wake of many teen suicides, these protections are needed now.

Amidst this employment deficit and recession, it is crucial that the NM Senate Bill 28 and New Mexico Executive Order No. 85-15 of 2003 is enforced on the most comprehensive scale possible. Under the law, it is illegal to discriminate against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and heterosexuals in matters of employment, housing, credit, public accommodations and union membership. Sexual orientation discrimination is also prohibited in New Mexico public employment by executive order.  People approach NMGE about discrimination and hostile working environment cases against poor working class and wealthy working class LGBTQIP New Mexicans alike.  We see this especially in eastern, rural New Mexico and here in Albuquerque.  Employers and employees must abide by and make use of these laws. These discrimination cases must stop before they happen, and we want the Governor to help enforce these laws aggressively.  It is what is right for New Mexico.
We hope by meeting with Governor Susana Martinez that LGBTQIP people experience equal protection under the law, and are free from cultural and social transphobia/homophobia, without caveat or compromise.  We would like to have a meeting within the next few weeks. Thank you for your time and consideration.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Let Go

Her mouth grasping for air as she floats between our world and his

With her little pink blanket and bloody cheeks.

And his head weaved through the chaos of the metal like a handmade basket

His limp body still warm, but lifeless.

As she hangs on with no hope for he is long gone with the angels

What does she have to live for?

Her breathing slows, death hovering over her eagerly waiting, but she gasps again

Her path is not clear, perhaps her body won’t let go of the spirit begging for relief.

Her eyes, a piercing ice blue, wide with terror, just let go…

Their lives strapped down to the pieces of an object that no longer holds its function

All the object holds is blood scattered over the white life-saver that served no purpose.

It holds them intensely, smothering them, crushing her chest, gripping her life, just let go…

Looking for you for help, heads bowed in silence, eyes fluttering

Whirlwind around us looking for the instruments to help her hold on just let go…

Close your fragile blue eyes and meet him, just let go…
